Ways to be Wilder Young Poets Network PNN poetry competition. Highly Commended poems: slug by Luo Wen

Today we are continuing our  series of pages publishing the winning and highly commended poems in the People Need Nature/Young Poets Network “Ways to be Wilder” poetry competition, hosted by the Young Poets Network. We are also publishing judge Jen Hadfield’s notes on the poems.

This is one of the highly commended poems.

Slug by Luo Wen (14)

slug

Competition judge and poet Jen Hadfield commented:

“This short, intense poem is full of drama, humour and experimentation. It’s a kind of Alice-in-Wonderland Drink-Me potion that lets us shrink and see the world from a slug’s perspective. There are lots of surprises in word-choice, simile and metaphor – always rich and sensual – your slug has the heroism and Romantic sensibility of an Arthurian knight.”
